Carpenters construct, erect, install, or repair structures and fixtures made of wood, such as houses, storage buildings, and decks. Basic carpenters work on building frameworks, including partitions, joists, studding, and rafters, as well as wood stairways, window and door frames, and hardwood floors. Other specialized carpenters, call “finish carpenters” also install cabinets, floorboards, moldings, and build wooden furniture. Texas does not require carpenters to be licensed.

The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) is a non-profit foundation developed with the support of more than 125 construction CEOs and academic leaders to provide nationally recognized training, assessment, and certification standards for the construction trades. The NCCER Core Certification is a prerequisite to all other NCCER construction trade training certifications. The curriculum provides each trainee the basic skills needed to continue his or her education in a chosen craft area.

According to the Texas Workforce Commission, the state-wide annual number of job openings for carpenters and plumbers is expected to exceed 3,000 individuals through 2024. These individuals can earn a starting wage of $18 - $20 per hour.
