Program Description:

The Health Information Technology AAS degree prepares students through an online curriculum to be entry-level health information technicians (HIT) who function as members of health information management departments and other related areas. Although direct patient care is outside the scope of an HIT’s duties, they will work closely with clinical staff to ensure quality of electronic health records (EHR) and paper documentation; accurately code all diagnoses and procedures for reimbursement; review health records for timeliness, completeness, accuracy and appropriateness; and maintain confidentiality of all records and information. Additionally, HIT professionals are responsible for organizing, preparing, analyzing, and maintaining patients’ health records. Graduates work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, clinics, doctors’ offices, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation centers, insurance companies, law firms, psychiatric facilities, government health agencies, and other health care related organizations.

After successful completion of this two-year degree, graduates are eligible to sit for the Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification exam.

The Health Information Technology AAS degree is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM), 233 N. Michigan Ave, 21st Floor, Chicago, IL 60601-5800, (312) 233-1100; www.cahiim.org.

Program Notes:

This degree can be completed entirely online. All courses within the degree plan must be completed with a “C” or better.
