Music, Field of Study AA

The field of study curriculum should serve as the basis for structuring the associate’s degree in music and is designed to apply to a Bachelor of Music degree - but may also be applied to the Bachelor of Arts or other baccalaureate-level music degrees as deemed appropriate by the awarding institution. The FOS Curricula for Music shall consist of 27 to 35 lower-division semester credit hours that are fully transferable. Transfer of credit in ensemble, applied study, and theory/aural skills shall be on a course-for-course basis. Additionally, the FOS Curricula for Music contains one semester of music literature that will automatically transfer into the student’s degree program at a receiving institution. Academic credit shall be granted on a course-for-course basis in the transfer of theory/aural skills, applied music, and ensemble courses and will be accepted at the credit-hour level of the receiving institution.

Note: FOS transfers to all state colleges/universities.

Core Component: 27 Credit Hours

Life and Physical Sciences: 3 Credit Hours


If any overflow hours are earned from Life and Physical Sciences, they will be applied to the Component Area Option.

Creative Arts: 3 Credit Hours


American History: 3 Credit Hours

Government/Political Science: 3 Credit Hours


Choose One (1):

Component Area Option: 3 Credit Hours


If any overflow hours are earned from Life and Physical Sciences, they will be applied to the Component Area Option.

Choose One (1) course equaling three (3) hours unless overflow hours from Life and Physical Sciences is used:

Field of Study: 33 Credit Hours


Music Theory: 8 Credit Hours


Aural Music: 8 Credit Hours


Class Piano: 4 Credit Hours


Applied Music: 4 Credit Hours


  • MUAP 1000-level instrument or voice

Applied Music: 4 Credit Hours


  • MUAP 2000-level instrument or voice

Music Ensemble: 3 Credit Hours


  • MUEN 1000-level marching/concert band, choral union or jazz ensemble

Music Ensemble: 2 Credit Hours


  • MUEN 2000-level marching/concert band, choral union or jazz ensemble

Total Hours for Degree: 60 Credit Hours
